Beautiful woman in Pacific Beach, California is doing laundry and holding a basket of clean clothes.

‘Tis the season… for stains!

It’s that time of year…. Lots to do and lots of time in the kitchen! The holidays are a great time for hosting, cooking, baking, and inevitably, spilling something on your clothes! It happens to all of us, but how do we remove those stains from our clothes? The first step is to identify the source. Next, use the guide below to address the stain sooner than later, and then launder the item. It’s your best chance at being able to actually remove the stain from your clothing.

I’ve found that having a simple DIY stain remover on hand is a great way to make sure all of my family’s stained clothes get treated before getting washed. I make this homemade spot remover and use it all. the. time.

DIY Spot Remover:

2 cups water

1 cup Dawn Dish Soap (I like the blue variety)

½ cup Baking Soda

Shake and spray the stain away!

Now, that may not be enough to get rid of the stain, so here are some tips I’ve learned to remove specific stains:

How to Remove Coffee Stains — My guilty pleasure is the coffee from Glazed Coffee & Creamery in Pacific Beach. You probably already know how this story ends…. Yep, I spilled coffee all over my shirt one morning while enjoying my peppermint mocha latte. No problem! First, I soaked the stain in cool water, then I applied stain remover, and laundered the item according to directions.

How to Remove Chocolate Stains — Did some of those chocolate chips fall on you while baking? My kids love the giant glazed ice cream from Glazed Coffee & Creamery, but they always manage to spill some on their shirts. Yours too? We get it! Soak the stain in warm water before adding stain remover and then laundering.

How to Remove Fruit Stains — if you drop some fresh fruit, juice, or jam on yourself, we have the fix! Boil some water and have the water run through the item of clothing from back to front. Ta da! Fruit stains should be out! Launder your clothing item as per directions and you shouldn’t have any evidence left of your raspberry tart.

How to Remove Wine Stains — This one can be tricky. Still, here are some great options for stain removal. First, cover the stain with salt. Then pour boiling water onto the stain from back to front. If that’s not available, try white vinegar before washing.

How to Remove Grease Stains (butter, oil, mayo) — Remember in My Big Fat Greek Wedding when the dad puts Windex on everything? Same here, but this time with Dawn Dish Soap. This dish soap is a lifesaver when removing grease stains. It works best on cotton fabrics, and a miracle worker for grease stain removal. Apply to stain, gently rub, and launder.
